As
many game developers know, lighting is a very important component. The
reflections, shadows, and refractions add all the extra depth in a 3D
scene. It had been a long time doing this, so a while back I decided to
make a city that is themed in the depths of night, thus putting more
focus on the lighting scheme. I call it Noctus (Latin for Night). One
thing that often becomes problematic in developing these templates is
that some light radii will overlap causing one of the lights to work
improperly, revealing a visual flow disruption. In a long distance view, some lighting will be omitted due to Occlusion in the view field parameter.
The 14 screenshots below are all I have at the moment, but clearly shows how well a perpetually dark scene can be enhanced by multiple point lights and very little directional light. The directional light in this scene is only to show a hint of moon light to enhance perspective of depth. This scene also uses the Fog particle field to augment the night time visuals, so as to give the undertones of a misty environment. It is turned off here for more accurate screenshotting.
The Moon light is also able to be captured in light shimmers off of many surfaces, as was done by using the axis of the main directional light in conjunction with the skybox properties to insure a proper angle of shadows and accent lighting.
I also wanted to create a visually pleasing Entrance (3rd pic) so extra lighting was used, as well as enlarging light radius and intensities. The 1st and 4th pic ar3 the city grounds without the perimeter housing/lighting placed. I wanted to make sure it was visually consistent with what a natural night time setting would be. The last 4 pics are in Game mode using a 3rd person controller, to test visuals and pathways.
That's pretty much the project/scene. I only design game scenery. I don't code or go into technicals like Audio location placing, proximity event triggering, teleporting, NPC interaction, animation, or anything else. I just make the eye candy. When I'm done, it gets saved and I move on to the next idea. 😁
More projects to be showcased soon. Either I share them with you, or nobody ever sees them. I'd rather share :)
